What does GEO / AI Search Optimization check?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is SEO applied to AI search surfaces. Google's official position (2026): no special AI files, llms.txt, content chunking, or AI-specific rewrites are needed — GEO is rebranded SEO rooted in core ranking and quality. The audit scores passage-level citability (optimal: 134-167 words), checks 12 AI crawlers (7 obey robots.txt, 3 are user-triggered and can't be blocked, 2 for training), validates entity density and brand mention signals, and checks server-side rendering since AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript. Brand mentions correlate 3x more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks (Ahrefs study, 75k brands). Content under 3 months old is ~3x more likely to be cited. Only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for the same query — platform-specific optimization is essential.
Each category produces a pass/warn/fail status with a score out of 100. Issues are prioritized into 4 severity levels: Critical (fix immediately), High (fix within 1 week), Medium (fix within 1 month), and Low (backlog).
AI Crawler Access
Checks robots.txt for 7 crawlers that obey robots.txt: GPTBot (OpenAI), OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot (Perplexity), Bytespider (ByteDance), Google-Extended (Gemini training), CCBot (Common Crawl). Also flags 3 user-triggered crawlers that can't be blocked via robots.txt: Google-Agent, Google-NotebookLM, ChatGPT-User.
Brand Mention Analysis
Scans brand presence across Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn. YouTube mentions have the strongest correlation with AI citations (~0.737). Wikipedia and Reddit are ChatGPT's top citation sources (47.9% and 11.3% respectively).
Passage Citability
Scores each section for AI-extractability: optimal passage length 134-167 words, ~44% of AI citations come from the first 30% of a page, self-contained answer blocks (can be extracted without context), claims attributed with specific sources.
Platform-Specific
Two distinct Google citation engines: AI Overviews (strongly ranking-correlated, cites top 10 pages) and AI Mode (broader pool, fresh + authoritative). Only 13.7% URL overlap between them. ChatGPT prefers Wikipedia (47.9%), Perplexity prefers Reddit (46.7%).
Technical Accessibility
AI crawlers do NOT execute JavaScript — SSR is critical. Checks llms.txt (Google ignores it per official docs, may help non-Google AI), RSL 1.0 licensing, content freshness (3 month refresh cycle for 3x citation rate).
How are issues categorized?
Each category produces its own score out of 100, with a pass/warn/fail status. The overall score is computed from all categories combined. Issues are grouped by severity for clear prioritization.
| Severity | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Blocked | Critical |
| Poor | Needs work |
| Fair | Moderate |
| Optimal | Ready for AI |
